SUPPORT DEMOCRATIC MAYORAL CANDIDATE BILL THOMPSON

Lambda Independent Democrats, Brooklyn's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender political club issued the following statement today.

Now that New York's Democratic primary voters have selected Bill Thompson as the Democratic nominee for Mayor of New York City, Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn, the borough's LBGT political club, strongly urges City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, one of the city's progressive Democratic leaders, to promptly endorse and actively support Bill Thompson for Mayor.

Lambda Independent Democrats statement on Der Blatt advertisement

On August 27, an anonymous advertisement was placed in Der Blatt newspaper, a weekly published in Yiddish. The ad, in support of a candidate in the race for the 39th Council District, implied, using thinly veiled but hate-filled homophobic references, that the candidate was opposed to marriage equality and other LGBT issues. Lambda Independent Democrats finds the ad offensive and divisive.

We were heartened to learn that, on August 31, the candidate sent a letter to Der Blatt asking that it publish a retraction/correction and to deny any connection with his campaign. (http://www.bradlander.com/blog statement- on-unauthorized- der-blatt- ad) A similar ad was reportedly run by another candidate in the same race. This candidate has not denied the ad or denounced such hate speech.

On September 7, City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn and Empire State Pride Agenda Executive Director Alan Van Capelle issued a press release denouncing homophobia in any election and asking for everyone to acknowledge the request for retraction and acknowledgment that the ad had nothing to do with the candidate's campaign.

Lambda Independent Democrats is a political club whose mission is to advocate for the LGBT community. We urge voters to reject such divisiveness in this race and to focus on the issues that will make a difference in the daily lives of all residents in District 39. We encouage LID members and friends to lend their support to our endorsed candidates, all of whom continue to share and champion our values and reject the hateful sentiments of the ad published in Der Blatt.

LID has endorsed Bob Zuckerman in the race for the 39th District. We strongly believe that he will advance our community's interests and the interests of all New Yorkers as a member of the City Council.

Please vote for LID-endorsed candidate Bob Zuckerman for the 39th Council district in the primary election on September 15.

LID Statement on Sheepshead Bay Holocaust Memorial

As long-time supporters of an inclusive Holocaust memorial, Lambda Independent Democrats is pleased that the memorial in Sheepshead Bay will respectfully honor and remember the more than 5,000 homosexuals who were persecuted, tortured, and murdered by the Nazis during their reign of terror from 1933 to 1945. While the Nazis focused on the annihilation of Jews, which resulted in the brutal murders of more than 6 million Jews, it is important to remember and commemorate all victims of the Nazi regime, including the nearly 5 million homosexuals, Russian soldiers and civilians, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, political prisoners, disabled people, and Catholics. When we acknowledge the true scope of Nazi atrocities we are also able to fully reject the hatred, bigotry, and evil that instigated such acts. We therefore reject the efforts of some who would choose to use a memorial in remembrance of all those lost during the Holocaust to divide us, rather than to unite all against hate, persecution, and genocide.

LID Announces Addtional Endorsements

On Thursday, June 4th, Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn held their second endorsement meeting, attended by many current candidates for local office. Each candidate was given time to speak and to answer questions from the L.I.D. membership before the vote was held.

Endorsements included: John Liu for Comptroller, JoAnne Simon for City Council District 33, Tish James for City Council District 35, Bob Zuckerman for City Council District 39, Lew Fidler for City Council District 46 and Rachel Adams & Reginald Boddie for Civil Court.

In the race for Comptroller, John Liu and David Yassky tied at LID's last endorsement meeting. Liu won the runoff vote on Thursday.

L.I.D. declined to make endorsements in City Council District 38.

Endorsements already given in May include Bill Thompson for Mayor, Bill De Blasio for Public Advocate, Charles Hynes for District Attorney, Marty Markowitz for Borough President, and Diana Reyna for City Council District 34.

LID Announces Endorsements for Bill Thompson for NYC Mayor, Bill de Blasio for Public Advocate and More

Brooklyn, NY On Monday, May 18^th, Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn held an endorsement meeting attended by many current candidates for local office. Each candidate was given time to speak and to answer questions from the L.I.D. membership before the vote was held.

Endorsements included: Bill Thompson for Mayor, Bill De Blasio for Public Advocate, Charles Hynes for District Attorney, Marty Markowitz for Borough President, and Diana Reyna for City Council District 34.

In the race for Comptroller, John Liu and David Yassky tied. There will be a runoff vote between those two on June 4^th. Other races that will be considered on June 4^th include: City Council Districts 33, 35, 38, 39, 46, and Civil Court judgeships.

L.I.D. declined to make endorsements in City Council Districts 36, 37, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 47, and 48, but remains open to doing so should interested candidates seek the club's endorsement on June 4^th.
